TRANSPORT
Australia’s public
transport system includes trains, buses, tramways, ferries, two major
national airlines and a number of regional airlines. Tickets can be
bought at train stations, on buses and trams and at news agencies. Your
education provider will be able to give you details of your local public
transport when you arrive.
If you have a student
visa, you can drive in Australia using a valid license from your home
country. You must carry your license with you when you are driving. If
your license is not in English, you must also carry an official
translation or an International Driving Permit with it. There are
different regulations in each state and territory regarding driving so
you will need to check with the relevant authorities before you start
driving. Your education provider will be able to refer you to the
necessary organizations. Australians drive on the left-hand side of the
road and the steering wheel is on the right-hand side of the vehicle.
Metered taxicabs operate
in all major cities and towns. You will find taxi ranks at transport
terminals, main hotels or shopping centers or you can hail taxis in the
street. A light and sign on the roof indicates if a cab is vacant. There
is a minimum charge on hiring and then a charge per kilometer traveled.
Taxi drivers do not have to be tipped.
